Cat vs. Hat

Amelia Earhart Aviator Cap, sorta finished Friday, July 21st, 2006
Pattern: Amelia Earhart Aviator Cap
Yarn: 100% cotton frogged from a green sweater
Needles: 3.75mm circulars
Dimensions: Giant x humongous x cyclopean
Watched: The Kingston Symphony performing the 1812 overture (with cannons!).
Pattern Notes: I don’t know if it’s just my loose knitting, but the gauge was way off. If I had knit it on 3.25mm needles, it would have worked out better. I liked the beginning of the pattern and the end, but the middle was filled with way-too-complicated row-by-row instructions. I so don’t have time for that. I don’t like paying attention to anything. However…
Would I knit it again? I would knit it again. And I shall have to knit it again, because it was way too big the first time.

I’ve not posted any pictures recently because I can’t find my camera’s battery charger. But here’s a picture (taken with Les’ camera) of Les’ housemate’s cat attacking my recently sort-of finished aviator cap.

I say sort-of finished, because the hat is a tad too big and I don’t really have the heart to seam it together and put it on and then never wear it because it would only fit someone with elephantitis. I’d rather have it wilt in my WIP basket until I get up the nerve to frog it and knit it up again with 3mm needles.

I even knitted it a needle size down, but my gauge was still too loose. I don’t know what happened. By the time I got halfway through I knew the score, but I thought it would get better somehow. I should NEVER just hope it will get better somehow.

All in though, it was fun. I sorta finished it in four days! I believe that’s a record.

Cat eats delicious yarn

  1. I was going to suggest felting it, then I reread your post. Cotton doesn’t felt, rats. Cute hat, cute cat. Sorry the gauge is playing with you.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on the church music. At first I thought you were my mom and I was busted (her name’s Eve). Hee hee.

  3. That would have been a cool idea, a wavy felted hat like that. But I’m afraid of wool, it always scratches me and I was hoping for this to be a summer hat. Thanks for the idea, though! I tend to make clothes that are too big, I think, so this may come in handy for the future.

I have a little 12″ G4 iBook. It’s the greatest! Also, I just moved to Firefox Yay!
